Whenever a prominent awards ceremony nears, you'll find a demand to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.
My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications actually cover many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything that year
- A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Just some puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
